Marvin Keith Orth

Marvin Keith Orth was born on December 6, 1934 in a farm home three miles north of
St. Francis to Lydia (Knorr) and Richard Orth. Marvin moved with his parents to live on a farm
four miles south of the Salem Lutheran Church for 10 years. They then moved to his
Grandfather's farm two miles northwest of the Salem Lutheran Church where he resided for 74
years.
He attended the Cherry Creek, Plum Creek, and White country grade schools. He
graduated from Cheyenne County Community High School in 1952, lettering in football and
participating in wrestling. A year after he graduated from high school, his father passed away. At
the young age of 18, he took over his family's farm with his mother, younger brother (Gordon)
and sister (Janice). After several dry years in the 50's, he and his mother put in an irrigation well
to improve their income. It was one of the first irrigation wells northwest of St. Francis.
After traveling to Denver with friends a number of times to a Lutheran Youth Group, they
got invited to a picnic at Genesee Mountain Park west of Denver where they met three other
Lutheran Youth Groups. It was there that he met a Norcator, Kansas girl, Veda Marie
Hasenyager. Veda was going to business college and working at Hamilton Management and
Investment at the time in Denver. After dating for several months, he and Veda were married
June 17, 1962 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Denver. Veda was the church secretary at the
time. After their marriage, they came to live on the family farm northwest of St. Francis. Their
first child, Roger Allan was born two years later on November 1, 1964 and their daughter,
Cynthia Lynn on August 14, 1968.
Marvin and Gordon farmed and ran cattle together for many years until Gordon's death
due to a welding accident in 2009. After that, Marvin's son, Roger, and daughter-in-law, Terri,
took over a large portion of the cattle work and farming. Marvin and Veda moved to town in
2020 after retiring from the farm. Since then, Marvin's grandson-in-law, Tyler Lauer, and
granddaughter, Trista, have taken over the family farm.
Marvin served on the Cheyenne County Soil Conservation and F.H.A. boards for several
years. He also served on the Salem Lutheran Church Council for many years. Marvin was
passionate about farming and his cattle. He loved riding around on his four wheeler and
watching his irrigation sprinkler. He was always proud of the accomplishments of his children
and grandchildren. He enjoyed life and cherished all of his friends and family.
Marvin is preceded in death by his parents Richard and Lydia Orth, brother Gordon Orth
and sister-in-law Betty Orth. He is survived by his wife Veda Orth, sister Janice (Ed)
Crabtree, son Roger (Terri) Orth, daughter Cynthia (Chris) Bancroft, grandchildren Trista
(Tyler) Lauer, Ashlee (Nathan) Forbes, Alec Bancroft, Abigail Bancroft, great-grandchildren
Kaiden Lauer, Kailey Lauer, and Kasidee Lauer, and many more family and friends.
