Delores Jane “Dee” (Lillich) Dorsch was born on March 15, 1935, in Bird City, Kansas, at Dr.Berderwell’s brick hospital on East 6th Street. She passed away peacefully on August 29, 2026,at Cheyenne County Village in St. Francis, Kansas, at the age of 91 years, 5 months, and 14days.Dee was the third daughter of August and Edna Lillich and grew up on the family farm south of Bird City. She was a lifelong resident of Cheyenne County and was deeply connected to the community she loved.She graduated from Bird City Rural High School in 1953 and Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa,in 1957. On December 28, 1958, she married her high school classmate, Stanley Royce Dorsch, in Bird City. Together, Dee and Stan shared 63 years of marriage before his death in2021.Dee was a devoted mother to Jeffrey, Scott, and Jennifer and a beloved grandmother—“Grandma D”—to Daniel, David, Jonathan, Austin, Emily, Joshua, Anna, and Andrew. She treasured her family and took great joy in watching each of them grow into an amazing humans. She is also survived by one great-granddaughter and one great-grandson.The garden and sewing room were Dee’s happy places. She loved growing bearded iris, and each year her garden offered a spectacular display of blooms around Memorial Day. The iris garden was a favorite part of the property she and Stan developed along West 6th Street in Bird City.Dee began sewing and quilting at an early age and could create nearly anything from fabric. Asa young woman, she earned county fair awards for garment construction. Over the years, she curated a collection of quilts made by her own hands, along with treasured pieces created by other quilters. She collected quilt books, fabric, and—perhaps most importantly—quilting friends.During the 1980s and 1990s, Dee was an integral member of the Kansas Quilters Organization and the Kansas Quilt Project, helping document quilt histories and catalog quilts throughout the state. She spent many happy afternoons quilting with the community church ladies whenever there were quilts to be quilted. As a teacher, she organized quilt-making projects for nearly every newborn child of the school faculty. Her quilts carried both her creativity and her love,making them treasured gifts for generations.When she wasn’t quilting, Dee could often be found curled up with a good book. She loved her home, her family, and her collection of Fiesta dishes, which decorated the table for family meals and helped make ordinary gatherings feel special and fun.Dee and Stan were full-time farmers and ranchers, and Dee also dedicated 18 years to education in the Bird City and Cheylin schools, serving from 1970 to 1988. She led the elementary physical education program and taught high school government. In the 1970s, she introduced the President’s Physical Fitness Challenge to the elementary schools and founded“Little People’s” Basketball Fun Night, which became a much-anticipated highlight of the Cheylin winter sports season.As a government teacher, Dee took her students to observe the election process and impressed upon them the importance of voting and participating in a representative democracy. She believed in helping young people understand both their responsibilities and their ability to make a difference.Dee gave generously of her time and talents to many organizations, including the Girl Scouts,Bird City Community Club, Bird City Centennial and Quasquicentennial celebrations, Bird City Century II, the Cheyenne County Election Board, the Cheyenne County Historical Society, and the Tri-State Antique Engine & Threshers Association.She helped develop and document the Threshers’ quilt collection, staffed the quilt building, and lovingly cared for the quilts for many years. In 2018, she was honored to serve as Thresher Queen.Dee also supported Stan in his fundraising efforts for the Bird City Library building project. Their life of service began as a young married couple when they led Luther League and continued through many years of service to St. John’s Lutheran Church. It was there that Dee was baptized, confirmed, and married. She loved the historic prayers of her faith and prayed faithfully for her family.Dee was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stan; and her sisters, Elaine (Lillich)Kortenhof and Loretta (Lillich) Dohmeier.She is survived by her sister, Janice (Lillich) DeLozier; her children, Jeff (Sherri) Dorsch,Kenneth Scott Dorsch, and Jennifer (Scott) Erickson; eight grandchildren;and two great grandchildren.Dee’s life was a patchwork of family, faith, teaching, farming, gardening, books, and beautiful works made by hand. She leaves behind not only the people who loved her, but also the many quilts, gardens, lessons, traditions, and acts of kindness through which her love will continue to be remembered. She was seldom ruffled and always patient with a quiet and steady personality having a long view of life beyond circumstance. A graveside service will be held at 10 am on Monday, October 19 at the Bird City Cemetery.
